U18 County tournament
Several Brooklands girls travelled across the Pennines on a cold November day to represent Lancashire u18’s in the annual Northern Counties tournament. Representing the A team, Frankie Williams-Denton, Phoebe Hurt (joint captain), Martha Halford and Ella Brophy. Playing for the B team Ruby Hurt, Eve Gould, Jade Sprott, Alice Leary, Alexia Howarth, Anna Brennand, and Pip Nuttall. Unfortunately Molly Grimshaw had tested positive for COVID, and was unable to make the trip.
Due to overnight illness, both Cheshire and Yorkshire were forced to pull their B teams from the competition, so Lancs B stepped up to play in the A team competition.
First up, Lancs A v Lancs B was a tense game, with a strong B team holding the A team, who were definitely feeling the pressure. It was a great game, end to end action, producing great movement, feeds and goals. Going into the final quarter the game was tied, Lancs B piled on the pressure with some superb play, but Frankie stood tall in goal, and produced some game winning saves. The A team managed two quick breaks, and scored two fantastic team goals to get the win. Final score 8-6.
With just 15 mins rest, both team were back on, A team playing Cheshire and B team up against Yorkshire. Both teams dominated their respective games, and the goals started to fly in. The B team proved their strength with a solid defence holding off any Yorkshire challenge. They controlled the game from the draw, and finished resounding 17-2 winners.
On the other pitch the A team relaxed, combining well, and really starting to click in attack. After a flying start by Lancs, Cheshire started the second quarter well, with quicker moves really testing the Lancs defence. However Lancs were strong to react, and repelled all but one of the attacks. Another resounding win. Final score 15-1.
Another 15 mins rest, and the girls were back on for the final game, the A team taking on Yorkshire and the B team Cheshire. The A team started quickly scoring goal after goal, retaining the fluency and skill even with the constant changing of personnel. All the girls were on top form, despite the freezing cold weather, and finished the game 16-2 winners to retain the Trophy from the last County tournament played in 2019.
Despite being tired and cold, the B team continued to impress with a calm and collected display against a battling Cheshire team. Several different plays resulted in some excellent team goals, and the team finished worthy winners. Final score 14-9.
It was a fantastic day for Lancashire lacrosse, finishing a commanding first and second overall. All the girls played their part and should be proud of these results. Brooklands goalkeeper Frankie Williams-Denton was voted a very worthy MVP for the Lancashire A team.
